About Me

My photo
I was raised in South Florida back in the years when it was a peaceful and wonderfully safe place to live. We lived a mile from the beach and could ride our bikes over the intercoastal bridge right to the best beach around. All my years of growing up I was a competitive swimmer and belonged to AAU. I granduated from Florida State University with a BS degree in nursing. I am recently retired but I'm thinking of going back to work to support my hobbies.

ANOTHER NEW PARAKEET

I have gradually figured out that my new little blue "male" parakeet, whom I named "Sidney" is actually a "Sidweena".  Yep, he has turned out to be a she.  I am so disappointed, because I had her finger trained and rather tame - at least tame enough to come out of her cage to play.  I was suspicious, when I first got her (she was given to me by someone), and now that I've had her for a while, I am certain that my suspicions were well-founded.  Female parakeets make good pets, but they're less social, rather cranky, and they don't talk nearly as well as the playful little males do.  Therefore, I went to Pet Smart this afternoon and bought a new 'keet - this one is yellow and green, and I'm sure he is a young male.  Tomorrow I'll start all over with the training process.  Sidweena had been hand-fed, so she was easily tamed.  This new one, however, has not, so he will take more time.  I've tamed many a parakeet before, so I'm sure he'll come around in time and, hopefully, be a good talker.  In the meantime, my sweet little female budgie will be going to the grandchildren of a friend of mine.  She'll make a fun pet for them.

I'm a great fan of parakeets as pets.  When I was 8 years old I got my first parakeet, and he was a great, talkative little bird.  Unfortunately, one day, while he was sitting on my father's head, my Dad got up from his chair and walked outside, having forgotten the bird was there.  Bye, bye Birdie!!  This happened to two of my birds.  After that, I made sure that their wings stayed clipped when they were out of their cage.  While my children were still home, I actually raised parakeets in an outdoor aviary and sold them to the local pet store.  That was soooo much fun.  What beautiful colors I came up with!

I have to go to bed early tonight, because I have my annual eye appointment tomorrow morning.  I'll have to dilate my eyes and be blinded by light for the majority of the day.  I won't even be able to wear my contacts!  Talk to you later.
